INSIGHTTHE RESIDENCIES

The Klangforum Wien artistic residency unfolds through three key moments: the performance of a concert featuring pieces selected via an international Call for Scores, a sound-diffusion event called Urban Interaction, and the Symposion, an immersive concert-event.

During their stay in Agrigento, the Klangforum Wien will rehearse and perform a concert showcasing the pieces chosen in February through the international Call for Scores. This concert will give voice to diverse musical trends of the Mediterranean area, offering a platform for avant-garde music.

In May, Klangforum Wien will bring music to the city's iconic spaces through Urban Interaction, a sound-diffusion event. Musicians, divided into small groups, will animate Agrigento's characteristic locations, creating moments of interaction with the city and fostering a mutual exchange and connection between the ensemble and the local community.

Inspired by Plato, the Symposion is a one-of-a-kind event also scheduled for May. For approximately seven hours, the ensemble will deliver a continuous flow of music accompanied by wine tastings, all in a relaxed setting with cushions and futons, potentially held outdoors.

In the enchanting setting of the Teatro dell’Efebo, music by renowned contemporary composers such as Haubenstock-Ramati, Sciarrino, Furrer, Cage, Haas, Iannotta, Scelsi, Ablinger, Xenakis, and many others will be performed, creating an unmatched sensory and cultural experience.

INSIGHTDISCOVER THE PLACE

Giardino della Kolymbethra

Kolymbetra

The Giardino della Kolymbethra, managed by FAI, is a rare archaeological and agricultural gem within the Archaeological Park of the Valley of the Temples. This extraordinary place embodies the colors, flavors, and scents of Sicilian land while narrating the story of ancient Akragas through its artifacts and hypogea, carved 2,500 years ago.

Today, it also serves as a venue for cultural events, exhibitions, and performances.

DISCOVER THE PLACE

Lampedusa

Lampedusa is the largest of the Pelagie Islands, located in the Mediterranean Sea. Known for its crystal-clear waters, idyllic beaches, and pristine nature, it is an ideal destination for sea lovers and those seeking tranquility. The island is also famous for the Isola di Lampedusa Nature Reserve and its rich biodiversity.

INSIGHTMEET THE ARTIST

Klangforum WienComposed of 25 musicians from 13 countries, Klangforum Wien continuously explores new horizons of artistic creativity alongside the most prominent composers of our time. Open-minded, virtuosic in performance, and audibly perceptive, Klangforum Wien is one of the most renowned contemporary music ensembles in the world, dedicated to artistic interpretation and expanding experiential boundaries.

A performance by Klangforum Wien is an event in the truest sense of the word: it offers a sensual, immediate, and irresistible experience. The novelty of its music speaks, acts, and captivates.

Since its founding by Beat Furrer in 1985, the ensemble—recipient of numerous awards and honors over the years—has made its mark on music history. It has premiered around 600 world-first performances, built an extensive discography of over 90 publications, and graced prestigious concert halls, opera houses, and major music festivals worldwide.

Klangforum Wien also hosts its own annual concert series at the Wiener Konzerthaus. The ensemble’s thoughtful repertoire selection and profound understanding of compositions contribute to its diversity, delivered through the finest and most joyful music performances.

Waste as an Object of Artistic Creation

The project was created to raise public awareness about the importance of the creative reuse of waste materials, promoting collective reflection on ecology, responsible resource use, and critical social issues such as peace and migration. Through three site-specific public art installations, artist Edoardo Malagigi invites the community of Agrigento to examine their relationship with waste and its potential transformation into something meaningful.

The project will unfold in multiple phases, accompanying the creation of the artworks with moments of community involvement and reflection. The Temple of Tetrapack features the colorful surface of columns, with visible packaging brands highlighting the importance of local contributions to the project.

In End Game, a tired and seated Pinocchio becomes a symbol of criticism against war, lies, and fake news, sparking reflections on truth and peace. The installation will be placed in Agrigento’s Central Station Square, serving as a focal point for community dialogue and awareness.

We Are All Migrants will be a symbolic and evocative sculpture addressing the universal theme of migration. A three-meter-diameter sphere will be constructed from wood salvaged from shipwrecks that arrived in Lampedusa. The curved planks, reminiscent of boat hulls, will be assembled with visible screws to emphasize their origin and history. The internal structure, made of steel rods, will support the sphere, which will rest on a corten steel base in Piazza Pirandello. The artwork will invite visitors to reflect on shared humanity and the impact of migration.

These works will not be mere aesthetic objects but catalysts for dialogue and participation. During the creation phases, schools and local communities will be engaged in educational workshops and collaborative activities. These moments will allow a deeper understanding of sustainability and reuse, showcasing how art can be a powerful tool for inspiring positive change.

SPHAIROS: Philosophical Encounters in the Land of Empedocles

A philosophical journey into the heart of Agrigento, where the tradition of ancient thought intertwines with present-day challenges.

The theme of the first edition, “Inside and Outside Plato’s Cave”, delves into the myth of the cave through keynote lectures, talks, theatrical performances, and philosophical walks. The event is curated by the Fondazione Orestiadi and the “Pier Paolo Pasolini” Cultural Center, with scientific direction by Alfonso Maurizio Iacono and artistic direction by Giovanni Taglialavoro.

From April 9th to 12th, academics, intellectuals, and students will gather to reflect on identity, knowledge, and learning in a dialogue that transcends the boundaries of two worlds—being inside and outside the cave, a metaphor for learning itself.

This event offers a chance to rediscover Agrigento as a place of thought, where the future is deeply rooted in an ancient heart.
