Agrigento, Italians Capital of Culture 2025

THE SELF, THE OTHER, AND NATURE

Relationships and Cultural Transformations

Hospitality is the pursuit of harmony, but also the acceptance of conflict as a necessary force for existence. These forces—harmony and conflict—blend the generative elements (water, air, earth, and fire) to give life to countless individuals, nature itself, and the entire globe.

Welcoming others, different from ourselves, is an exercise in relationship-building.

WELCOME TO AGRIGENTO, ITALY’S CAPITAL OF CULTURE 2025

In Agrigento, hospitality is not just an action but a profound practice that weaves through individual and collective relationships, striving for harmony among cultures, identities, and territories.

In 2025, the city will transform into a grand stage where Empedocles' four elements—water, air, earth, and fire—will guide a unique artistic and cultural journey. Every corner of the region will tell stories of beauty and complexity: from the majesty of the Valley of the Temples to the stunning white cliffs of the Scala dei Turchi, from the labyrinth of historic streets to charming villages and vibrant cities brimming with creativity.

We invite you to explore the rich program of exhibitions, performances, events, and installations celebrating the meeting of tradition and innovation. Artists, philosophers, and storytellers from around the world will enliven the territory, engaging with local communities and enhancing the cultural and natural heritage of Agrigento and its surroundings.

Agrigento 2025 will be a haven of cultures, where diversity becomes richness and art a bridge to the future. Join us to experience this extraordinary adventure of beauty, hospitality, and creativity.

THE PROGRAM

Agrigento’s cultural program as Italy’s Capital of Culture 2025 draws inspiration from Empedocles’ theory of the four roots: Water, Air, Earth, and Fire.

Empedocles, the 5th-century philosopher from Agrigento, who represents a cornerstone of Western thought, provides the theoretical foundation for our project. He proposed the theory of the four elements in 490 BCE, stating that these elements, essential to life, generate eternal strength when united. The symbol of their union is the Roman cross ("+").

Taking inspiration from these four elements, held together by the concepts of love and strife, we explore the dynamics of life:

“Whenever the elements, emerging into the light, unite to form a man, wild beasts, plants, or birds, they call it birth; but when they separate, they call it wretched death...” (Empedocles, On Nature, Fragment B9).

LOVE AND STRIFE: THE FORCES THAT UNITE AND DIVIDE

Love unites, and strife divides, yet both forces are essential. When they unite, something is born; when strife dominates, something dies. Friendship (Love) and Strife, equally important, with their unique qualities, shape the cosmos and balance creation.

These elements, fundamental to life, serve as metaphors for challenges and opportunities, highlighting the unifying role of love and the divisive role of strife. This integrated approach invites reflection on the interconnectedness of elements and their role in building a sustainable, inclusive, and resilient society. Each element translates into a specific theme guiding cultural and artistic projects, offering new perspectives on social inclusion, innovation, territorial enhancement, and community building.

The Luigi Pirandello Theater in Agrigento will host the official inauguration of Agrigento as Italy’s Capital of Culture 2025. Opened in 1880, the theater is one of the city's main cultural landmarks. Named after the celebrated Agrigento-born writer and playwright Luigi Pirandello, the theater boasts a grand neoclassical facade and a richly detailed interior. It hosts a wide array of events, from theatrical performances to concerts and cultural showcases, making it a cornerstone of Agrigento's artistic life.

MEET THE ARTIST: TANJA BOUKAL

During a series of residencies between October and December 2024, Austrian artist Tanja Boukal immersed herself in the daily life of Lampedusa, collecting stories, experiences, and perspectives from local residents.

Born in 1976 in Vienna, Boukal blends textile craftsmanship with socio-political critique. Trained in embroidery (HBLA Herbststraße) and set design (Wiener Kunstschule), she delves into communities to reveal on-the-ground realities. Her projects have addressed border tensions (Melilla, 2014), unemployment (Mulhouse, 2018–2019), and the lives of adults with mental disabilities (Rheinau, 2023–2024).

Her first solo museum exhibition, Political Correctness (2013–2014, Museum der Moderne Salzburg), defined her critical lens. Subsequent solo shows include No one has any intention of building a wall (2016, Kunstverein Augsburg), Gone Rogue (2019, Ruth Funk Center, Florida), and Do you know that we have lost? (2021–2022, Dům umění, Brno). She has also participated in group exhibitions like Demonstrating Minds (2015–2016, Museum of Contemporary Art KIASMA, Helsinki) and Mouvements (2022–2025, Musée d’Art et d’Histoire Neuchâtel, Switzerland).

EXPLORE THE PROJECT: THE GARDEN OF PEACE

Under the guidance of Gilbert Fillinger, the Italo-French Garden of Peace serves as a tribute to universal values of peace and remembrance. As part of the European Gardens of Peace project, this landscape installation unites architects and designers from various countries, symbolizing resilience and harmony among cultures.

In collaboration with Art & Jardins | Hauts-de-France, the project has created over 30 gardens across Europe since 2018 in locations marked by World War I. In October 2025, Agrigento will host the official inauguration of the Garden of Peace, alongside a compelling photo exhibition showcasing previously completed projects.

This place of reflection and beauty invites visitors to envision a united future, reminding us that peace requires constant care and commitment. The project not only honors Sicily’s stunning landscapes but also reaffirms culture’s role as a bridge between peoples and generations.

EXPLORE THE PROJECT: INSCRIBE THE LIVING GESTURES OF HOSPITALITY INTO UNESCO’S INTANGIBLE HERITAGE

The international collective PEROU presents a groundbreaking initiative that transforms acts of hospitality into cultural treasures. Amid the 21st century’s crises—climate change, health emergencies, and geopolitical conflicts—the Mediterranean becomes a symbolic space where gestures of rescue, care, and friendship emerge.

These actions, born of resilient and united humanity, represent an invaluable heritage deserving recognition as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.

Led by the PEROU collective, the project aims to document, celebrate, and safeguard these practices through visual iconography and strategic preservation plans. Highlights of the 2025 initiatives include the creation of a digital archive, an image collection, and a short film, culminating in an official presentation on October 3 in Lampedusa during the Italian Day of Memory and Hospitality.

This program fosters collaboration among artists, cultural institutions, and local communities, underscoring Agrigento’s role as a crossroads of intercultural dialogue and a symbol of hospitality. The UNESCO dossier invites the public to reflect on the universal value of hospitality and the importance of preserving these practices for future generations.
