Alcantara Gorges & Castelmola — From Taormina

Discover the remarkable basalt formations of the Alcantara Gorges and panoramic Castelmola on a private day excursion from Taormina or Giardini Naxos.

Highlights

  • Volcanic Alcantara Gorges
  • Panoramic Castelmola
  • Nature and Village Heritage

Overview

Discover an unusual combination of volcanic nature and medieval village atmosphere on a private excursion from Taormina or Giardini Naxos. Travel inland towards the Alcantara River, where ancient lava flows were shaped into remarkable basalt columns by the water. Enjoy viewpoints and designated visitor paths in the gorge area; the canyon is not a swimming pool and access to its riverbed depends on water levels, operator arrangements and seasonal restrictions. The standard programme does not include body rafting, canyoning or technical equipment. Return towards the Ionian coast and climb to Castelmola, a small hilltop village overlooking Taormina. Wander around Piazza Sant'Antonio, enjoy the stone streets and take in broad coastal views from the terraces. This itinerary uses private transport and self-directed visits. A nature guide, river activities and any charged gorge entrance are additional arrangements rather than automatically included services.

The Alcantara Gorge is especially memorable for its geometric-looking basalt walls, created by the cooling and fracturing of lava and subsequently shaped by river erosion. Castelmola provides a contrasting experience: a small village where stone architecture and broad coastal views encourage a slower pace. These two settings are intentionally paired without adding demanding trekking or specialist river sports, making the standard visit more approachable.
