Coastal Sicily: Seaside Villages & Hidden Beaches – 8-Day Self-Drive Tour
Discover southeastern Sicily at a relaxed pace: Syracuse and Ortigia, the Vendicari wetlands, Marzamemi, Portopalo, Scicli and Marina di Ragusa, with time for coastal walks and independent beach stops.
Highlights
- Ortigia and the Syracuse Coast
- Vendicari and Fishing Villages
- From Scicli to Marina di Ragusa
Overview
Begin in Catania and travel to Syracuse, where the island of Ortigia offers a remarkable combination of historic architecture, narrow lanes, open squares and waterfront promenades. Use two nights here to discover the city and the nearby coastline without repeatedly packing your bags. Continue towards Noto and the protected coastal landscapes of Vendicari. Here, wetlands, sandy paths and old tuna-fishing structures offer a very different rhythm from the island's famous monumental sites.
Visit Marzamemi, a former fishing settlement known for its intimate central square, and continue to Portopalo di Capo Passero, where the Ionian and Mediterranean coastlines meet. Further west, discover Scicli's historic streets, the seaside atmosphere of Sampieri and Marina di Ragusa, before returning to Catania for a convenient final overnight.
This is not a package of guaranteed beach activities: swimming, reserve access and boat outings depend on season, weather, local regulations and personal preference. The proposed price basis is seven nights in three-star hotels, breakfast and an economy-category rental car. Entrances, meals other than breakfast, beach services and all optional experiences are excluded. The pace is intentionally relaxed, with free time and alternatives for travellers visiting outside the summer season.
Day by day
- 1
Day 1
Arrival in Catania
On arrival at Catania Fontanarossa Airport, collect your economy-category car and drive to your three-star hotel in the city. Depending on your flight time, take a relaxed independent walk through Piazza del Duomo, Via Etnea and the nearby historic streets. You may prefer to park your vehicle for the evening and enjoy Catania's cafés and restaurants on foot. No fixed sightseeing schedule is imposed on arrival day, so late flights remain possible without missing a promised visit. Dinner is at leisure and payable locally. Overnight in Catania.

Day 2
Syracuse and the Island of Ortigia
After breakfast, leave Catania and drive south towards Syracuse. Check into your selected hotel or leave your luggage according to the property's arrangements, then explore Ortigia on foot. Wander through the old lanes around Piazza Duomo and the Fountain of Arethusa before continuing along the waterfront. Choose your own lunch at a market stall or local restaurant. Visitors interested in ancient history may include an independent visit to the Neapolis Archaeological Park, with admission paid separately. Parking restrictions apply in parts of Ortigia, so use authorised parking and confirm access with your hotel. Overnight in Syracuse.

Day 3
A Relaxed Day on the Syracuse Coast
Enjoy a second day based in Syracuse without changing hotels. You can explore more of Ortigia's monuments and museums independently, take time at a seafront café or, in suitable weather, drive towards the coastal areas south of the city. Fontane Bianche and the Plemmirio coastline are possible alternatives, but access, parking and sea conditions should be checked locally. The itinerary intentionally does not promise a boat trip or a beach service. If the weather is less favourable, Syracuse offers museums, historic churches and food traditions to discover at your own pace. Return to your Syracuse hotel for the night.

Day 4
Noto and the Vendicari Wetlands
After breakfast, travel south towards Noto and the nearby Vendicari Nature Reserve. Depending on the season, weather and opening conditions, follow one of the authorised walking routes through Mediterranean vegetation and coastal wetlands, with opportunities to observe birds and discover views towards the old tonnara. Wear suitable shoes and carry drinking water; paths may be sandy and exposed to the sun. Reserve admission, where required, is not included. Continue to Noto in the afternoon to admire its golden limestone buildings and spend time in the historic centre. Check in to your three-star accommodation in the Noto area.

Day 5
Marzamemi and Sicily's Southernmost Villages
Set off after breakfast towards Marzamemi, one of southeastern Sicily's most characterful former fishing settlements. Enjoy a walk around Piazza Regina Margherita, with its old tonnara buildings, cafés and low stone houses. Continue to Portopalo di Capo Passero, where fishing traditions and the island's southern coastal landscapes shape daily life. The day is deliberately light, leaving time for a scenic stop, a leisurely lunch or an optional visit to a nearby beach when conditions are suitable. Any boat activities or paid services must be arranged independently. Return to your hotel in the Noto area for the second overnight.

Day 6
Scicli, Sampieri and Marina di Ragusa
Check out and drive west towards Scicli, a Baroque town set between rocky hills and celebrated for its historic streets and elegant façades. Explore the centre on foot before continuing to Sampieri, a seaside village whose beach and coastal scenery offer a pleasant contrast to the inland towns. In the afternoon, drive to Marina di Ragusa and check into your selected three-star hotel. Stroll along the waterfront, enjoy the harbour atmosphere and choose a restaurant at your own expense. As this is a self-drive holiday, the exact balance between sightseeing and beach time is entirely your choice.

Day 7
Coastal Morning and Return to Catania
Enjoy breakfast and a final relaxed morning on the Ragusa coast. You may make a short optional stop at Punta Secca, or simply spend more time in Marina di Ragusa before travelling north to Catania. This is a transfer day, so plan your route with sufficient time for traffic and any breaks. On arrival, check into your final three-star hotel and spend the evening independently, perhaps returning to a favourite café or discovering another corner of Catania's historic centre. Overnight in Catania to make the following day's airport departure more convenient.
