The Cyclops Riviera & Acireale – 4-Day Self-Drive

Explore Catania's nearby Ionian coast on a relaxed four-day self-drive. Discover Aci Castello, Aci Trezza, Acireale and Santa Maria la Scala, staying in one 3-star Catania hotel.

Highlights

  • Aci Castello's Lava-Rock Fortress
  • The Faraglioni of Aci Trezza
  • Baroque Acireale and Coastal Villages

Overview

The coast just north of Catania offers a compact short break with remarkably varied scenery: black volcanic rock, fishing villages, a Norman castle above the water and elegant Baroque streets. This four-day self-drive keeps the distances manageable and uses one three-star hotel in Catania for all three nights, so every outing is a simple return journey.

Begin in Catania with time to explore the central squares independently. The following day, take the coastal road towards Aci Castello, where a fortress stands above dark lava rock, then continue to Aci Trezza to admire the Faraglioni, a group of striking sea stacks closely associated with local legends and fishing culture. There is no need to pack a visit with too many attractions: a waterfront walk and lunch in a local restaurant are part of the pleasure of travelling independently.

Your second full day leads to Acireale, known for its Baroque centre, decorated churches and traditional pastries. Depending on weather and road conditions, continue towards Santa Maria la Scala for a glimpse of a small coastal settlement beneath the cliffs. Return to Catania for a final free evening.

The proposed package combines three breakfasts, one three-night stay in a selected three-star hotel and an economy-category rental car collected and returned at Catania Airport. Museum and castle entrances, optional boat activities, beach services and meals beyond breakfast remain excluded. This is an easy, flexible introduction to the Riviera dei Ciclopi, not a guided sightseeing tour.

Day by day

  1. 1

    Day 1

    Welcome to Catania

Arrive at Catania Fontanarossa Airport and collect your economy-category rental car. Drive to your selected three-star hotel in Catania, where you will stay for all three nights. If time permits, leave the car parked and explore the streets around Piazza del Duomo, Via Etnea and Villa Bellini independently. Stop for a granita or a local dinner at your own expense. No fixed attractions or long transfers are scheduled on arrival day, keeping this itinerary suitable for a wide choice of flight times.

    Day 2

Aci Castello and the Faraglioni of Aci Trezza

After breakfast, drive north towards Aci Castello and enjoy a walk by the dark volcanic shoreline beneath the castle. You may visit the castle museum if it is open, with admission payable locally. Continue a short distance to Aci Trezza, where the Faraglioni rise offshore and small fishing boats add character to the waterfront. Enjoy a relaxed lunch or café stop and spend time exploring at your own pace. An optional boat trip is possible only if independently arranged and operating safely; it is not part of the package. Return to your Catania hotel for the second night.

    Day 3

Acireale and Santa Maria la Scala

Following breakfast, visit Acireale to discover Piazza Duomo, the city's Baroque façades and its lively café culture. Walk through the centre rather than trying to drive into pedestrian areas. Depending on conditions and your preference, continue towards Santa Maria la Scala, a small fishing settlement reached by winding roads beneath the coastal escarpment. Parking and access may be limited, so consider this a flexible extension rather than a compulsory stop. Return to Catania in the afternoon for another evening at leisure. All church museums, paid attractions and meals are excluded.

    Day 4

    Departure from Catania

Enjoy your final breakfast, check out and return your rental car to the supplier at Catania Airport. Allow time for vehicle inspection, any refuelling required by the rental contract and flight check-in. The Riviera dei Ciclopi break ends without changing hotels.

Good to know

Insider tip
Enjoy Aci Trezza on foot from an authorised parking area; the Faraglioni are best admired from the shore without needing a boat trip. Santa Maria la Scala is reached by winding roads, so skip the detour if access or parking is difficult.
Accessibility
Coastal paths can involve steps and uneven lava rock. The road to Santa Maria la Scala includes bends and the village has limited parking. Accessible hotel rooms and an adapted rental vehicle must be requested and confirmed separately.
What to bring
Driving licence and rental documents, comfortable non-slip footwear, sun protection, water, camera, light outer layer and GPS navigation. Check coastal weather before planning optional outdoor activities.
