Màkari Movie Tour: 8 Days in Western Sicily

Discover the landscapes of Màkari in western Sicily on an 8-day tour of San Vito lo Capo, Scopello, Erice, Segesta, Agrigento, Monreale and Palermo, with local food experiences.

Highlights

  • The Coastal World of Màkari
  • Greek Temples and Contemporary Culture
  • Western Sicily's Food and Heritage

Overview

Follow the landscapes associated with the Italian television series Màkari on an eight-day journey through western Sicily. Begin beside the Gulf of Macari and the San Vito lo Capo coastline, where the dramatic meeting of mountain and sea provides the setting for Saverio Lamanna's stories.

Explore Trapani's historic salt pans, medieval Erice and the coast near Scopello, then discover Sicily's Greek archaeological heritage at Segesta, Selinunte and Agrigento. Continue to Favara's contemporary art scene before ending with the Norman mosaics of Monreale and the market traditions of Palermo.

The programme includes time at leisure in San Vito lo Capo, with optional excursions to the Egadi Islands or the Mozia and Marsala area available by separate arrangement. Seven nights are distributed between the San Vito lo Capo area, Agrigento and Palermo. The tour combines on-screen settings, archaeology and local cuisine without treating optional visits as guaranteed inclusions.

Day by day

  1. 1

    Day 1

Arrival in Palermo and the Gulf of Macari

Arrive at Palermo Airport and meet the tour representative for the scheduled transfer towards the San Vito lo Capo area. If arrival times allow, stop at the Gulf of Macari, where a dramatic mountain backdrop, open coastal scenery and clear Mediterranean waters provide a memorable introduction to the settings associated with the television series Màkari.

Discover the landscape surrounding the fictional home of Saverio Lamanna, the character created by Sicilian writer Gaetano Savatteri, and appreciate how the coastline has become an essential part of the series' visual identity. The introductory stop depends on group arrival times and cannot be guaranteed for late flights.

At the hotel, enjoy the scheduled welcome cocktail with Sicilian savoury specialities and an introduction to the journey. Dinner and the first overnight stay in the San Vito lo Capo area. The first dinner remains subject to the group's arrival arrangements.

    Day 2

Trapani Salt Pans, Erice and the Scopello Coast

After breakfast, travel to the traditional salt pans south of Trapani. Their shallow basins, windmills and changing colours recall centuries of salt production along Sicily's western coast. Discover the historic salt-working landscape and the Salt Museum at Nubia, with museum admission payable separately.

Continue to Trapani's old town, set between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Mediterranean, before climbing to the medieval hilltop village of Erice. Walk along its cobbled lanes, admire stone-built churches and enjoy sweeping views towards the Egadi Islands. A traditional three-course lunch in a local trattoria is included, with the drinks specified in the tour's meal arrangements.

In the afternoon, continue through the Custonaci area, known for its marble quarries and associated screen locations, towards the coast of Scopello. Enjoy viewpoints over the historic tonnara and its striking sea stacks; access to the private complex or swimming areas is not guaranteed. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight.

    Day 3

San Vito lo Capo at Leisure — Optional Egadi Islands Cruise

Enjoy breakfast and a day at leisure in San Vito lo Capo, where the sandy bay, coastal promenade and local food traditions provide an appealing contrast to the tour's archaeological visits. Explore the town at your own pace, relax by the sea in suitable weather, or try its famous fish couscous at a restaurant of your choice.

An optional boat excursion from Trapani to Favignana and Levanzo may be arranged, subject to season, sea conditions, operator schedules and a separate quotation. Depending on the confirmed sailing programme, guests may enjoy coastal views, time ashore and possible swimming stops. Lunch on board, visits to the former Florio tuna fishery and other activities are not part of the standard included package unless explicitly specified in the optional excursion offer.

Return to your hotel for the scheduled dinner and overnight. Guests who do not book the optional excursion remain free to enjoy San Vito lo Capo.

    Day 4

Optional Mozia and Marsala — Phoenician Heritage and Wine Country

After breakfast, enjoy free time in the San Vito lo Capo area, or choose an optional excursion to the Stagnone Lagoon and Marsala, subject to an advance quotation and operational confirmation. This excursion is separate from the included touring programme.

The proposed excursion travels through the lagoon's salt-working landscapes before taking a boat to Mozia, the ancient Phoenician settlement on San Pantaleo Island. The archaeological remains and Whitaker Museum reveal a distinctive chapter of Sicily's Mediterranean history. The return boat crossing and archaeological admissions must be specified in the optional excursion price; they are not assumed to be included in the standard tour.

Continue to Marsala, a town recognised for its maritime history and wine traditions. According to the arrangements confirmed for the excursion, a winery visit or a stop at the Regional Archaeological Museum Lilibeo may be possible. Lunch is at leisure unless otherwise quoted.

Return to the hotel for the scheduled dinner and fourth overnight stay in the San Vito lo Capo area.

    Day 5

Segesta and Selinunte — Across Western Sicily to Agrigento

Leave the coast after breakfast and travel towards Segesta, one of western Sicily's most remarkable archaeological landscapes. Admire the monumental Doric temple standing in open countryside and discover the setting of the ancient theatre, subject to site access and the applicable admission arrangements.

Continue south towards Selinunte, where extensive archaeological remains overlook the Mediterranean. The great temple complexes and ancient city walls recall one of the most powerful Greek settlements in Sicily. The impressive coastal setting also provides a link with the landscapes appearing in the television series.

Take time for lunch around Marinella di Selinunte or en route. Lunch arrangements, including the historic mention of a Sicani Mountains meal, must be checked against the confirmed service plan; a specific included lunch is not promised on this day without that confirmation.

In the afternoon, continue towards Agrigento for hotel check-in, dinner and the first of two overnight stays.

    Day 6

Valley of the Temples and Favara's Contemporary Art

Begin with the Valley of the Temples, Agrigento's exceptional UNESCO-listed archaeological site, where Doric monuments rise among olive trees and Mediterranean vegetation. Explore the remains of ancient Akragas and admire the Temple of Concordia, one of the finest preserved Greek temples anywhere in the Mediterranean.

The landscape also connects with scenes and cultural references from Màkari, allowing the tour to move beyond the coastal locations to a wider portrait of western Sicily. A traditional lunch in a local trattoria is included according to the original meal programme; drinks follow the confirmed group arrangements.

Continue to nearby Favara for the Farm Cultural Park, an innovative cultural project that has brought contemporary art, creativity and new life into a group of historic courtyards. Discover the contrast between Agrigento's classical monuments and Favara's contemporary cultural scene. Admission is payable separately unless confirmed otherwise.

Return to the hotel in the Agrigento area for dinner and overnight.

Monreale and Palermo — Mosaics, Markets and Street Food

Visit the magnificent Norman cathedral, celebrated for the golden mosaics covering its interior, and discover the setting of its historic cloister. Ticketed areas are subject to the applicable admission fees.

Continue to Palermo, a capital shaped by Arab, Norman and later Mediterranean influences. Explore selected highlights of its historic centre, from monumental architecture to lively streets and market quarters. A scheduled street-food tasting offers a chance to experience characteristic Palermo specialities, such as panelle, arancine or sfincione, depending on the confirmed tasting arrangements.

Enjoy time at leisure before checking into the Palermo hotel. In the evening, the original programme provides dinner in a typical local trattoria, giving the group another opportunity to appreciate Sicilian regional cooking. Overnight in Palermo.
