Ortigia Island & Sea Caves — Boat Experience
Admire Ortigia's historic waterfront and the sea caves along Syracuse's coast on a private boat cruise, with coastal panoramas and swimming when conditions permit.
Highlights
- Ortigia from the Sea
- Sea Caves and Limestone Coast
- Private Coastal Cruise
Overview
See Syracuse's historic island of Ortigia from the water on a private boat excursion along its dramatic coastline. After boarding at a confirmed local landing point, sail around the island to admire the old waterfront, sea walls and the imposing Castello Maniace from the sea. Continue towards the caves along the northern coast of Syracuse, where the skipper will approach permitted areas according to currents, waves and vessel dimensions. The limestone rock formations and shades of the Ionian Sea provide a different perspective on the city's history and geography. Swimming may be possible in a safe, sheltered spot, but entry into caves and any bathing stop can never be guaranteed. This is a boat sightseeing experience, not an interior museum visit or a guided walk. The private vessel, boarding location and maximum certified passenger capacity must be agreed with an authorised operator before reservations are accepted.
The island's waterfront tells part of the story of Syracuse as a Mediterranean maritime city. From the boat, historic fortifications and the shore around Castello Maniace appear in a setting that cannot be appreciated in the same way on foot. The nearby sea caves add a natural element to the excursion, but their entrances may be unsuitable for approach during rough seas. The skipper's judgement will always take precedence over the planned route.
