Southwest Sicily: Belice Valley & Ancient Coast – 8-Day Self-Drive Tour
Discover Sicily's overlooked southwest on an eight-day road trip through Gibellina, Mazara del Vallo, Selinunte, Menfi and Sciacca, with ancient temples, coastal towns and the Valley of the Temples.
Highlights
- Belice Valley: Art and Renewal
- Selinunte and the Southern Coast
- Rural Villages and Agrigento
Overview
Leave Palermo for Gibellina, where contemporary architecture and the vast memorial landscape of Alberto Burri's Grande Cretto tell the story of the area's earthquake and renewal. Continue to Mazara del Vallo, a working fishing town whose old quarter reflects a long exchange between Sicily and North Africa. From here, explore the temples and sea-facing ruins of Selinunte at your own pace.
Follow the coast through Menfi to Sciacca, a town of ceramics, narrow streets and maritime traditions. Spend time in its historic centre, then drive into the hills to discover Caltabellotta and the rural scenery surrounding the town. The journey ends in the Agrigento area with an opportunity to visit the Valley of the Temples before returning to Palermo.
The programme balances meaningful visits with time to linger over a coffee, find a local restaurant or stop beside the sea. Seven nights in selected three-star hotels, breakfast and an economy-category rental car form the proposed package. Admissions, meals other than breakfast, optional guided visits and tastings are excluded. Specific hotel names and vehicle terms are subject to final quotation and confirmation.
Day by day
- 1
Day 1
Arrival in Palermo
Arrive at Palermo Falcone-Borsellino Airport, collect your economy rental car and make your own way to a selected three-star hotel. Depending on your arrival time, enjoy a short independent introduction to Palermo, perhaps around Piazza Pretoria and the old streets near Quattro Canti. The first day is kept free of long-distance driving so that even an afternoon arrival remains comfortable. Park the car in an authorised area, check any local access restrictions and choose your own restaurant for dinner. Overnight in Palermo.

Day 2
Gibellina and the Belice Valley to Mazara del Vallo
After breakfast, drive southwest towards the Belice Valley. Stop in Gibellina Nuova to discover its striking contemporary townscape and, if access conditions permit, continue to the Grande Cretto memorial at the site of the old town. This vast artwork is a place of reflection on the 1968 earthquake rather than a conventional museum attraction. Continue towards Mazara del Vallo on the southwest coast. Check in to your hotel and take an evening walk through the old quarter, where narrow streets, painted tiles and Arab-influenced details express the city's Mediterranean history. Overnight in Mazara del Vallo.

Day 3
Selinunte: Greek Temples Beside the Sea
Set off after breakfast for an independent excursion to the Selinunte Archaeological Park. Allow a generous part of the day to explore the extensive open-air site, where monumental temple remains rise above the Mediterranean landscape. The archaeological areas are spread out, so choose the sections you most wish to see and check the available internal transport arrangements and entrance conditions in advance. Bring water and sun protection as shade is limited. On the return drive, you may stop along the coast for a relaxed lunch at your own expense. Spend the evening back in Mazara del Vallo, perhaps enjoying the waterfront and working harbour.

Day 4
Menfi and the Coastal Road to Sciacca
After breakfast, check out and travel east through the landscape of vineyards, olive groves and coastal countryside around Menfi. Enjoy a short stop in town or, in suitable weather, make an optional detour towards a nearby beach. Local wineries may offer visits by prior arrangement, but no tasting or booking is included in this self-drive tour. Continue to Sciacca and settle into your hotel. Spend the afternoon exploring the historic streets above the harbour, admiring traditional ceramics and discovering small squares with views towards the sea. This is deliberately a lighter day, giving you time to enjoy the destination rather than rush between attractions. Overnight in Sciacca.

Day 5
Sciacca and Hilltop Caltabellotta
Dedicate the morning to Sciacca's historic centre. Wander through the lanes, browse local ceramic shops and explore the atmosphere of this lively coastal town. Later, take a scenic drive inland to Caltabellotta, an elevated settlement surrounded by striking rocky landscapes. Park in a suitable area and continue on foot through its old streets, pausing at accessible viewpoints. The village includes steep sections, so choose walks according to your mobility and the weather. Return to Sciacca for another evening at leisure. Any museums, crafts experiences or special visits are optional and payable separately.

Day 6
Towards Agrigento: Sea Views and Rural Landscapes
Leave Sciacca after breakfast and follow the southern part of the island eastward towards Agrigento. Enjoy the changing landscapes of agricultural countryside and Mediterranean coastline, with an optional stop at an authorised viewpoint towards the Scala dei Turchi cliffs. Access to the cliff itself is regulated and must never be assumed; respect local restrictions and safety notices. Continue to Agrigento, check in to your three-star hotel and enjoy time to discover the modern town or rest before the following morning's archaeological visit. The afternoon is intentionally flexible to accommodate driving, parking and seasonal conditions.

Day 7
Valley of the Temples and Return to Palermo
After an early breakfast, visit the Valley of the Temples independently. The archaeological park contains some of the most impressive surviving Greek temples in the Mediterranean, set among ancient ruins, olive trees and open landscapes. Allow enough time for walking between the main monuments; entrance tickets are not included. After your visit, begin the drive back to Palermo, taking a break along the route as needed. Arrive at your hotel and enjoy a final evening in the Sicilian capital. This overnight stop keeps the airport transfer on the last morning short and manageable.

Day 8
Palermo Airport Departure
After your final breakfast, leave the hotel and drive to Palermo Airport. Follow the rental company's return instructions, including any applicable fuel policy, and allow enough time for traffic, vehicle inspection and airline check-in. Your independent exploration of Sicily's southwest concludes.
