Syracuse, Ortigia & Noto — Day Trip from Catania

Explore ancient Syracuse, Ortigia's historic streets and Baroque Noto on a private day trip from Catania, with time for the Neapolis Archaeological Park and local discoveries.

Highlights

  • Ancient Syracuse & Neapolis
  • Ortigia's Historic Heart
  • Noto's Baroque Architecture

Overview

Explore the ancient Greek heritage and Baroque elegance of southeastern Sicily on a private full-day excursion from Catania. This carefully structured itinerary combines Syracuse's Archaeological Park of Neapolis, the island of Ortigia and the remarkable historic centre of Noto.

Travel south with your private driver to Syracuse, once one of the most influential cities of the ancient Mediterranean. At Neapolis, enter the archaeological park to admire the Greek Theatre carved into the hillside, the famous Ear of Dionysius in the ancient quarries and other monuments accessible on the day. The visit is independent unless a licensed archaeological guide is separately arranged, and admission is payable by guests.

Continue to Ortigia, the historic island at the heart of Syracuse. Wander from the remains of the Temple of Apollo towards Piazza Duomo, where the city's extraordinary Cathedral incorporates a Greek temple within its later architectural layers. Discover narrow lanes, elegant façades and the waterfront near the Fountain of Arethusa, then enjoy a short independent lunch break.

In the afternoon, continue to Noto, celebrated for its harmonious eighteenth-century Baroque architecture. Stroll along Corso Vittorio Emanuele and admire the Cathedral of San Nicolò, grand palaces and honey-coloured stone façades before returning to Catania.

This private day trip gives you a broad introduction to three essential cultural highlights without promising hurried interior visits at every monument. Private transport is included; professional licensed guiding and monument tickets are not included unless quoted separately.

Good to know

Insider tip
At Neapolis, concentrate on the Greek Theatre and Ear of Dionysius rather than trying to cover every archaeological corner in a short visit. In Ortigia, notice how the Cathedral's ancient Greek columns are incorporated into the later building, and admire the sea views near the Fountain of Arethusa. In Noto, look at how the warm limestone changes colour in afternoon light. A quick granita or light lunch can be enjoyed at your own expense in Ortigia.
Accessibility
The archaeological park includes uneven paths, steps and exposed walking areas. Ortigia and Noto have historic cobblestones, pedestrian sections and occasional slopes or steps. The standard itinerary is not guaranteed wheelchair accessible. Guests with limited mobility should contact Great Sicily before booking so that vehicle suitability and possible adjustments can be evaluated; full access cannot be guaranteed.
