  • West Coast Landscapes and Wine
  • Ancient Temples of Western Sicily

Overview

Discover western Sicily on an eight-day journey combining the comfort of a driver-guide with historic cities, archaeological treasures, coastal scenery and local food traditions. Begin in Palermo with the Norman mosaics of Monreale and the lively streets of the capital, then travel west to Segesta and the medieval hill town of Erice.

Enjoy the contrasting landscapes of the Zingaro coast, San Vito lo Capo and Trapani's salt pans before exploring the Phoenician heritage of Mozia and the wine traditions of Marsala. Continue to Selinunte and finish with the monumental Greek temples of Agrigento.

The route includes seven hotel nights in Palermo, Valderice and Agrigento. The historic package provides driver-guide services from Day 2 to Day 7, seven breakfasts, five hotel dinners and a Marsala wine tasting. Admissions, specialist site guides, boat tickets and airport transfers must be specified in the final quotation.

Day by day

  1. 1

    Day 1

Arrival in Palermo — First Impressions of Sicily

Arrive at Palermo Airport and begin your journey through western Sicily. The original itinerary describes a welcome and transfer to your hotel in Palermo; the exact airport-transfer service must be specified in the confirmed quotation, as the driver-guide service begins on Day 2.

Depending on arrival time, discover the lively atmosphere of the historic centre independently. Walk past Palermo Cathedral, explore the streets around Quattro Canti and Via Maqueda, or admire the exterior of Teatro Massimo. From bustling cafés to artisan shops and traditional pastry counters, Palermo provides an immediate introduction to Sicily's layered Mediterranean culture.

The evening is free for dinner at a restaurant of your choice. Overnight in Palermo.

    Day 2

Monreale and Palermo — Norman Mosaics and Historic Streets

After breakfast, meet your driver-guide and travel to Monreale, overlooking the fertile Conca d'Oro valley. The Cathedral's extraordinary golden mosaics reveal the artistic legacy of Norman Sicily, while the surrounding town offers broad views towards Palermo. Interior tickets and any specialist guiding are subject to the confirmed arrangements.

Return to Palermo to discover selected quarters of the historic centre, from its monumental squares to the colourful markets where everyday life continues among food stalls and small shops. Take time to sample a local speciality at your own expense and discover why the city's cuisine reflects centuries of cultural exchange.

If time and conditions permit, enjoy a coastal stop in Mondello before returning to the hotel. Driver-guide accompaniment refers to the transport and general assistance described in the historic package; specialist guided visits inside monuments must be confirmed separately. Dinner at leisure and overnight in Palermo.

    Day 3

Segesta and Erice — Ancient Temples and Medieval Lanes

Leave Palermo after breakfast and travel west through the countryside towards Segesta. Discover the setting of its remarkably preserved Doric temple, standing in an open valley, and the ancient theatre high on the hillside if access and visiting time allow. This archaeological landscape provides an impressive introduction to the Greek and Elymian heritage of western Sicily.

Continue to Erice, the medieval town perched high above Trapani. Wander along stone-paved lanes lined with old churches, small courtyards and traditional pastry shops. From the town's viewpoints, admire sweeping panoramas across the salt pans and towards the Egadi Islands when visibility is clear. A stop for an almond pastry offers a taste of Erice's renowned confectionery traditions.

Proceed to the Valderice area for hotel check-in. Dinner at the hotel under the historic half-board arrangement and overnight in the Trapani/Valderice area.

    Day 4

Zingaro, San Vito lo Capo and Trapani Salt Pans

After breakfast, travel towards the wild coastline of the Zingaro Nature Reserve. The driver-guide can bring you to an accessible entrance; walks inside the reserve are on foot and require suitable footwear. Depending on local access, weather and participants' abilities, enjoy a short independent nature walk or coastal viewpoints rather than a mandatory lengthy hike.

Continue to San Vito lo Capo, known for its broad sandy beach, clear water and the dramatic outline of Monte Monaco. Enjoy free time for a walk and the opportunity to taste the area's fish couscous at lunch, at your own expense.

In the afternoon, head towards Trapani and its salt-working landscape, where windmills, shallow basins and changing light recall a centuries-old tradition. A museum visit, if selected, requires separate ticket arrangements. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight in the Valderice area.

    Day 5

Mozia and Marsala — Phoenician History and Wine

Discover the Stagnone Lagoon, a distinctive landscape of salt pans, shallow waters and small islands. From the embarkation point, take a local boat to Mozia if seasonal service and weather permit. The island preserves important remains of a Phoenician settlement, offering a different perspective on Sicily's ancient Mediterranean connections. Boat fares and museum admissions are not included automatically and must be confirmed in the final offer.

Continue to Marsala, the historic town associated with wine production and Garibaldi's landing in 1860. The original package includes a Marsala wine tasting: discover the area's winemaking tradition at a selected producer, with the venue, tasting format and availability to be specified in the quotation.

Depending on the timing, enjoy a short walk through Marsala or a stop in Trapani's historic centre before returning to the hotel. Dinner and overnight in the Valderice area.

    Day 6

Selinunte and the Southern Coast — Journey to Agrigento

After breakfast, leave the Trapani area and travel south to Selinunte, one of the Mediterranean's most atmospheric archaeological landscapes. Explore the extensive remains of its ancient Greek city and the imposing temple ruins overlooking the sea, taking time to appreciate their scale and coastal setting.

Continue east along Sicily's southern coast towards Agrigento. Where road conditions, permitted access and daylight allow, stop at an authorised viewpoint overlooking Scala dei Turchi, the striking white marl formation near Realmonte. Access onto the cliffs or beach is not promised and depends on local restrictions.

Arrive in the Agrigento area for hotel check-in, dinner and overnight. This day combines one major archaeological visit with the transfer to the south coast, avoiding an overloaded schedule.

    Day 7

Valley of the Temples — The Legacy of Ancient Akragas

Today is devoted to one of Sicily's most important cultural landmarks: Agrigento's Valley of the Temples. Walk through the UNESCO-listed archaeological park and discover monumental Doric temples among olive groves and Mediterranean vegetation. The Temple of Concordia is particularly impressive, with its exceptionally well-preserved ancient structure.

As you explore, imagine the wealth and influence of Akragas, one of the major Greek cities of ancient Sicily. The area's long history, open landscapes and dramatic architecture make this one of the highlights of the journey. Admission and any archaeological guide are subject to the services confirmed in the final proposal.

In the afternoon, choose between free time in Agrigento's historic centre and a relaxing stop around San Leone if weather and logistics permit. Return to the hotel for dinner and a second overnight in the Agrigento area.

    Day 8

Return to Palermo Airport — Departure

After breakfast, check out from the Agrigento hotel. Your eight-day journey through western Sicily ends with travel towards Palermo Airport, subject to the departure transfer arrangement confirmed in your quotation.

The drive from Agrigento to the airport requires appropriate time for road traffic and airline check-in. A stop at Terrasini is possible only if departure timing and the booked transport permit; it is not a guaranteed part of the programme.

The original inclusion covers driver-guide services from Day 2 through Day 7, so the Day 8 airport transfer must be confirmed separately. No rental car is involved in this escorted itinerary. End of services.

Good to know

Insider tip
Taste almond pastries in Erice, and sample local fish couscous in San Vito lo Capo. At Marsala, ask about the traditional styles of the region's fortified wines during the scheduled tasting.
Accessibility
The historical centres of Erice and Monreale, nature reserve trails and archaeological sites have uneven terrain and steps. The Zingaro walk is optional and can be adjusted to physical ability, subject to access arrangements.
What to bring
Walking shoes for cobblestones and archaeological paths, sun protection, water, a light waterproof jacket, and layers for cooler evenings in Erice. Suitable clothing for church visits is recommended.
Important information
Driver-guide coverage in the original package is from Day 2 to Day 7 only. Airport transfers on Days 1 and 8 require separate written confirmation. A driver-guide is not automatically a licensed archaeological or monument guide; specialist interior guiding must be confirmed. Zingaro access depends on weather and park restrictions; Mozia's boat service also depends on operating conditions. The original Day 8 reference to a rental car was an error and has been removed. The historic €709 price remains unchanged and needs commercial validation against the contracted services.
